Yesterday I had finally locked down a reservation for my upcoming trip and thought all was good. Then at the end of the day, I get a message from the owner indicating that the truck is no longer going to be available and that he will need to cancel. This was due to his race schedule being released and finding out that he needs the truck to tow his race car. At least it’s for a cool reason!

Anyways, as a solution I went back to looking at my second choice of a GMC Yukon XL. I was considering both 2016 and 2013 options. I figured at first, why not just get the newer car? About the same price and mileage and not too far from home anyways. But then I got to looking and determined that the 2013 has quite a bit more trunk space. Even moreso than the Navigator actually! Also helps that the 2013 was a little bit closer and cheaper and is a higher trim (SLT versus SLE) although I doubt that makes much of a difference. The only downside of either GMC versus the Lincoln is slightly less rear leg room but hopefully it’s not too tight. Still more space than most airlines in economy anyways!

Hoping no more Turo cancellations...

Yeah, the current body style Suburban, because they chose to stay with a solid rear axle, and not have the rear seats be removable, has a much higher load floor than all the previous generations. They look good, but I would never own one because of that.

Hopefully for the next gen, they will either make the seats removable again, or switch to an independent rear end.

I drove a 2018 Yukon XL from LA to Cleveland. Have fun, it’s a bit like driving a bus (but comfortable, which was good on that 3,000 mile trip).

I like the Big Burbs or Yukons. There are few vehicles that do the same job as well as them. Last time my brother was in town he rented one to shuttle all of us around. We went to Temecula with 7 reasonably comfortable adults and got over 20 MPG on the highway. That seemed pretty good for such a HOV. I will say, bringing one of these behemoths to a halt is a little nerve racking for me after years of driving small cars/miatas/sports cars. I used the manual downshift option on the column shifter pretty much every time and that seemed to help a lot.

I will laugh if I am able to manage better gas mileage than my STi. Unsure if that means the truck gets “good” mileage or if the Subaru gets “BAD” mileage haha.

Should be fun to be a bus driver for a weekend!

After driving both flavors of Suburban, the half ton has a way nicer ride and can achieve respectable fuel economy, but my 3/4 ton actually has real brakes. The half ton’s brakes are a joke! Mine has never gotten better than 14 mpg, though.

Had this exact thing happen to me in Canada, with a silver Navigator nonetheless. User cancels and since it was the only 8 passenger vehicle available, the money had to be refunded. After 6 months of pushing Turo and trying to work it out with my bank I got my refund back.

Rent from immediate renters or I don’t remember how they were called, if not its just a hassle.

Yes.

It will be funny though. It just depends on how much city driving you will do. It takes a lot of BTUs to accelerate that tank haha

They did not seem up to the task at hand. Driving it kind of makes me worried about all the texting/yelling at Aydin/tired behind the wheel of these things. I would try to give them more room, but they all drive like maniacs.

I recently rented an 2016 Expedition XL EL, I liked it a lot. Like to the point where I was like “wtf is wrong with me, I’m obsessed with this thing”. The 3.5 Ecoboost was awesome in it. And there’s just something about driving something that gigantic. It’s exciting, especially if you are used to almost exclusively driving sedans.

Then even more recently I rented a 2017 Silverado, the 5.3 V8 is also quite nice. I didn’t like it as much as the 3.5 EB, but it did return very impressive mpg’s. Like right around the 20 mark (with a driving mix biased toward hwy).

You’ll have to let us know how you like the Yukon!

I’ve got a 2015 ‘ burb and mos tl y agree with you, but the power fold seats are nice and t here is still a good bit of room behind the third row. I’ve got 4 kids and we just went on a ski trip, with four full size ( 26") suitcases and 5 backpacks I still had a bit of visibility out the back. When we got to Colorado and rented a minivan (Dodge Caravan, because a ‘burb was $500/day ), the suitcases fit in back, but had no visibility, and had to put 3 of the backpacks in between seats in the passenger area.

Back in the day my family’s 1982 Suburban (6.2 diesel, non-turbo), didn’t even have the third row, not even latches. Just vinyl bench in the first and second rows, and carpet in the rear. That floor was definitely lower, maybe 4"?

Yeah, the lower floor was the same up until the current generation. I know they still have ple nty of cargo capacity, I just hate how high the load floor is.

Turo just always ends up being the cheapest when you want something specific. Like sure there are boutique companies that will rent specific vehicles but its usually $300+ per day. That is just unaffordable. And I really didnt want a random Dodge Caravan or even worse a Journey from the traditional places. Just not enough space for luggage. I have generally had good luck with Turo, its just too often that there are complications of sorts.

It did a great job of hauling 5 people and 7 people’s worth of 10-days-of-luggage, plus a cooler. The third row is kind of uncomfortable but otherwise it’s a good vehicle to haul a bunch of people/stuff for quite a ways.

Thankfully , we arent traveling 3000 miles but at least it should do pretty good on the ~350 or so of highway driving plus another 100 or so around town. I only hope that its not too bouncy in the back so that everybody can just relax, listen to some tunes, and enjoy the scenery. As the pilot of the limo boat, I will be busy dodging the typical 405 shitheads and hopefully not burning too much gas enjoying V8 POWAHH.

I have a 2003 Suburban and my friend had a 2004 Suburban. He built some really nice wood boxes to slide in the back very snugly. Worked great in both out Burbs. Then he buys a brand new 2015 Suburban. The nice box won't fit!!! He determined they shrank the width slightly!!! And then he determined they also shrank the back opening in height from 33" to 31"!!! So, my next and last Suburban will be a 2014! No latest gen for me. Maybe the next gen if they undo the shrinkage factor!

It was interesting that the newer car is smaller inside since it is actually longer by a bit according to the spec sheet I had looked at. But in general the dimensions of the older truck seem more usable for stuff. I’d have to imagine safety and aerodynamics are to blame. The newer truck does get better gas mileage but idk why mileage really matters when driving something like this.

Oh of course, it really can be the best option out there. I just won't rent again from a person who has to accept.

Good call. Also a good call to only rent from cars with more than just a couple of reviews. I have found that the private businesses operating through Turo seem to be the most reliable. But these seem to have more mundane cars most of the time. When looking specifically for manual sports cars, it tends to be private owners. So it just depends on the trip. The next cars I really want to rent from Turo for fun are the Alfa 4C and Civic Type R. But we shall see if I ever get around to it.

The back seats are reminiscent of a bus (bouncy!) but it’s possible the suspension of the one I had is different than the older ones. Likewise for fuel economy, I got about 23mpg on mostly-highway miles.

Since you’re in LA, thought about trying Getaround to rent your next car or truck? All bookings are instant and you can u nlock the car with the app. No need to wait around for the owner.

We couldn’t come up with a logical good reason for why they shrank the back area width slightly. The best we good figure is the new Gen millennial designers just didn’t think to check on this factor when doing there new design (because to them looks is more important than functionality). But we think we figured out the reason for the reduced internal height. The new Gen has these “good looking” massive new rim and tire sizes and related suspension/ground clearance...but they still had to keep the overall height low enough to fit in all the various multi level parking garage ramps. Many public garages have a max height of 6'8". So, if you have bigger tires and more ground clearance but still want to fit in Public garages, what has to”give”? The internal height of course! By 2 inches! Btw, the better fuel milage is probably more attributable to the 8 speed trans, and now even more so with the new 10 speed trans, and engine advances. I would gladly sacrifice some tire/clearance to get that 2 inches back internally.

Not like anyone in their right mind is going to actually need ground clearance like that anyways! And bigger wheels just lead to a less smooth ride.
